Principal of Kawahara Calligraphy School (Brush and Pen Calligraphy)
Calligrapher Coco Kawahara
Connecting hearts through calligraphy, guiding the leap into a new era
Born in 1978 in Takahama City, Aichi Prefecture.
He began practicing calligraphy in the second grade of elementary school, often spending hours absorbed in writing. In high school, he received his first commission as a professional calligrapher.
In 2016, after his calligraphy on a public park sign drew requests to open a class, he established his own calligraphy school. Known for a logical and reproducible teaching method, his students quickly advanced in rank, gaining recognition within the association. Beyond technical skills, he teaches students how to connect their refined abilities to future opportunities, including professional work. With a strength in teaching, he also advises parents of young children on practical methods to inspire motivation at home.
Through lettering design and performance calligraphy, he seeks to express the “essence” within both people and characters. He transforms emotions, visions of the future, cherished values, and unspoken voices into visible form.
Achievements
Received the Aichi Governor’s Award for two consecutive years in national calligraphy competitions.
Earned numerous other awards across Japan.
Provided calligraphy and design work for traditional Japanese restaurants, city council and prefectural assembly election campaigns (from Liberal Democratic Party to independents), and medical society elections hosted by Health Publishing in Tokyo.
Created lettering designs for public parks and contributed to exhibitions such as the Ikenobo flower arrangement instructors’ showcase.
